From Matt’s blog at line6.com Line 6′s Propellerhead Product Specialist Matt Piper demonstrates how to simulate a Talk Box effect for guitar using the formant filter in Reason’s Thor synthesizer, and also creates a classic auto-wah effect for guitar using Reason’s Envelope Controlled Filter.

sweet, im gona give it a shot now.
Wow. Despite the detailed explanation,this was pretty much rocket science to me. Since you’ve prepared a 7:56 minutes video already,it may be a good idea to make it even longer by adding the explanations to why choosing this or that connection and effect also…or just prepare a beginner’s class video set about signal chains and audio set-ups
@Ningirsutyr Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I will have an opportunity to post a video such as you suggest in the future. In the mean time, James Bernard has a good video about Control Voltage in his 52 Reason and Record Tips series. If you want to search for it, it is called: «52 Reason and Record Tips Week 4 – Unlocking the Secrets of CV and Gate.» If you check it out, please post back and let me know if it helped shed any light on my video here.
@line6movies It kind of helped as to be less intimated to watch your video and also the logic of the connections about CV and gate. Then again, I think it’s best if I’ll try these myself too to learn also in practice. James’ video is great in that he explains only 2 things in a focused manner. That could be also an improvement to Line 6 videos!
P.S: How can I hear the sound of my Pod XT Live from my PC while also hearing,say, the track from Guitar Pro?
@Ningirsutyr If you connect your studio monitors (powered speakers) to the outputs of POD XT Live, and select POD XT Live as your soundcard (audio output) in Guitar Pro, it should work. (Though I don’t have Guitar Pro to try it.) Have you seen this video: «Propellerhead Record + Line 6 POD X3 Live» ? POD XT Live will work similarly.
@line6movies Ok, I have Reason 4, but the is not a Line 6 Guitar Amp or Line 6 Bass Amp. What do I do?
@MrUSArmyBand
If you are the registered owner of Reason 4, to get the Line 6 amps, you would need to purchase «Record for Reason Owners.» Not only will that add Record’s audio recording capabilities, mixer, timestretching and Line 6 amps, but also when Reason 5 and Record 1.5 come out later this month (August 25, 2010), you will qualify for free upgrades for both products. The new version of Record even has vocal pitch correction.
can I combine a «talk box» combinater pacth though a vocoder and and my voice(adio track) and still get the flavour of an talk box effect ?
@abn666 In this video, the formant (vowel sound shape) is created by Thor’s Formant Filter instead of a human voice (as would be the case with a real Talk Box or a vocoder). I don’t think it would work well to run this Talk Box Combinator effect through a vocoder. Instead, I would use the technique used in the video entitled «Propellerhead Record + Reason: Vocoding with Guitar.» If you set the vocoder to a very high number of bands (maybe 512) you may get close to a talkbox effect.
@line6movies okay
btw your videos rock
@abn666 Thanks!
I don’t have Record, so this may be a stupid question, but what’s wrong with the clearly labeled «Wah» on the Line 6?
@line6movies Thanks, I swear $249 just jumped out of my pocket, but the software is amazing, no more $110 an hour at SoundTraxx!
@nickmorgan19457 The Wah on the front of the Line 6 amp sounds great, and you can control it with an expression pedal so that it’s just like using a real wah pedal.
Auto-wah is a different vibe. Instead of controlling the wah with a foot pedal, an auto-wah reacts automatically each time you play a note, controlled by how loud that note is. If you played the first 4 notes of Beethoven’s 5th (dah-dah-dah-DAH) through an auto-wah, it would (automatically) sound like «bwow-bwow-bwow-BWHAOOWW.»
@line6movies
I know what an auto-wah is. I’m just wondering why you used the filter module when you could have just plugged the CV cable from Scream to the «WAH» input on the back of the Line 6.
@nickmorgan19457
Excellent point, Nick!!!
Your suggestion works great, although it is a different sound (less extreme) than many envelope filter pedals.
I will add an annotation to the video.
Thanks so much for your very useful and brilliant feedback.
Hi … fantastic tutorial … just a question … it’s a very long built RPS … may i download it somewhere to use ?
Sincerly … many thanks for help.
Dany Rock Jr
i have to learn that auto wah. It’s hot and i could use it when i do get a chance to buy a guy. I have all of propellerhead main programs. I love reason and record. I’m a beginner making beats using only propellerhead programs. I will watch this vid a few times. Thanks and i have a vid on youtube. Type piranhas eating shrimp. The beat you hear in that vid is a beat i did in june. Peace and hop everyone enjoy.
