If you’ve been listening to a song in the past several years and found yourself overcome with a compulsion to bop, bounce, head-nod, or otherwise pulse to the music it may be be due in large part to side-chain compression. In a previous tutorial I’ve already shown you how tasteful compression works to level out a track like a bass guitar, for instance. «Side-chain» compression deliberately uses another sound source to tell the compressor how to behave and the desired effect is often anything but subtle. I’ll show you one of the most common uses this week: using a four-on-the-floor kick drum to make a synth pulse to the beat. Doing this gives your synth lines a near-hypnotic bounce effect. Get out your glow sticks and follow along! Below is the link to my combinator patch for this tutorial: www.propellerhead.se

    New mic doesn’t sound well.

Hey James, sorry its me againt but i have a serious problem. I want to do a professional filter sweep (that mau5 stuff /watch?v=d-G6ZHFJZNk 0:28). I’ve tried this over weeks and i am almost loosing my hope, i can’t find a serious tutorial about it. Is sampling the only way to achieve this? Or is it impossible to do such a thing in reason? I tried everything, noice osc, unison, delay reverb and so on… Could you please pls help me with an tutorial or a link to one or book or sth? thx so much

  5. LaustinSpayce:

@theoneandonlyhut That sounds a bit like a reverse cymbal & some noise running through a band pass EQ which rises, then crashes.

  6. MNCHNtoSTHLM:

@tintala You can use what you want. A Redrum, a Kong or a sampled sneeze of your grandpa loaded into the NN-19.
And keep in mind: You don’t have to do anything, because reason is all about experimenting.

  7. TSDREX:

i wasted 2 whole years on reason.. the reverb effects on reason is terrible.. not allowd to have plug ins.. all about FL stuido/logic/cubase :D DD

  8. Tokeijikaku:

Speaking of compression, what is one supposed to do about the transients, or clicks, that result from it?

Soft clip is just brute force which results in distortion, if anything, it makes the transients sound hard as polycarbonate. The lookahead brickwall setting on the limiter still lets through clicks above the threshold when fed a sufficiently strong signal, even if soft clip is enabled, not to mention it has a slow release, and seems more than a little inconsistent.

  9. MrBrandonPeoples:

@TSDREX yet you still come back to watch tutorials…fail

  10. LaustinSpayce:

@Tokeijikaku I’ve found that increasing the attack ever so slightly until you find the sweet spot between it sounding ‘clicky’ and sounding ‘slow’ really helps. (When you’re sidechaining anyways)

If you’re talking about regular compression causing clicks (or too much ‘punch’ or ‘crunch’) – I suggest you take a look at parallel compression.

I find the compressors in the mixer in record are MUCH better than the M-Class compressor in Reason. My favourite compressor for side chaining by far!

  11. LaustinSpayce:

@TSDREX You know you can rewire Reason into FL/Logic/Cubase and then use your Lexicon 480L as a reverb on that yeah?

  12. synthless:

    Your voice was clearer before

  13. Tokeijikaku:

@LaustinSpayce The problem to my experience with parallel compression is that it doesn’t do anything about the attacks, the transients just accumulate instead. What I’m getting to is that the problem isn’t that there are clicky transients, its that there are transients at all, that are substantially louder than the compressed signal. I want to level the transients down to the same as the compressed signal somehow, and how to do go by it effectively is beyond me.

  14. tintala:

    your voice was clearer before!

  15. jamesbernardmusic:

@tintala I literally got the mic about an hour prior to doing the video.. so I think I have a little more tweaking and settings to adjust.. but believe me the end result will be better. After looking at files I think I over compressed and had some major peaks when I was doing a sync clap… plus I am going to try using a few other of my audio interfaces to see which one has the best sounding Mic Pre. Fear not.. I’ll get it sorted.

  16. LaustinSpayce:

@Tokeijikaku Ah ok, what about doing parallel processing, but using the limiter with 4ms lookahead to chop your peaks out? Even by using the soft clip, the clip should hopefully be masked by the unprocessed transient. Then when summed back with the original, you should gain 6dB on everything that isn’t limited?

I’ve used some excellent peak limiters, (The Reason one isn’t bad), but the really really great ones I’ve had to rewire into a DAW for (Massey L2007, Waves L2 etc.)

  17. MrBrandonPeoples:

@LaustinSpayce spot on, I got back on to tell him the same thing

  18. OfficialViperoO:

yeah james you got the same microphone as me :D :D
thanks the sidechain effekt is what i searched for

  19. PlaysGameboytv:

    i…. LOOOOVVVVVEEEEEEE reason

  20. jamesbernardmusic:

I feel quite foolish… I figured out why the mic sounds a bit muffled… umm.. helps to actually be speaking on the correct side of a cardioid pattern mic. I was a bit thrown off by the shock mount which has a notch/groove which fits the mic in one way.. (pattern front facing opposite) but did not realize you can TWIST the mic after you insert it into the shockmount…. needless to say the voice WILL sound better from now on… OOPS!!!! See.. everyone makes mistakes!

  21. juanrosa01:

may you upload a refill packer tutorial?? Bless! :)

  22. portessa:

Who’d of thought something like that would be be so simple! Thanks for more tricks of the trade – looking forward to more!

  23. tintala:

@Rane909 How Ironic your post is… because on props forum there is a very heated debate as to wether or not Reason/Record is able to achieve pro results…lol…… your post prooves it! Reason is incredible.
